Better Than Picture Day
A seasonal studio portrait experience for kids where their personality shows up - no stiff smiles, no nervous chin-tuck. Just your kiddo, exactly as they are, looking like themselves.
Capture your connection exactly as it feels
School picture day has its place. But there's something it almost never captures - the actual kid in front of the camera and their personality. The one with the gap-toothed grin that only comes out when something is genuinely funny. The one who does that thing with their eyebrow. The one who is so completely, specifically themselves that you could pick their laugh out of a crowd anywhere.
That's what Better Than Picture Day is for.
A relaxed, fun studio session designed around letting your kid show up exactly as they are. Silly, serious, goofy, dramatic, somewhere in between. Whatever they've got. No forced smiles. No stiff poses. No countdown from three. Just your kid, in their element, looking like the person you actually know and love.
Why Better Than Picture Day?
Because your kid has a whole personality, and school photos most likely don’t show it.
These sessions are designed to feel like playtime with a camera nearby - not a performance for a lens. When kids forget the camera is there, that's when it happens. The raised eyebrow. The gap-toothed grin that only comes out when something is genuinely funny. The look they give you when they think they're getting away with something.
That's the photo you'll frame. That's the one you'll pull out in twenty years.
The experience/ how it works
What to expect
Each session is a booked 20-minute slot with plenty of breathing room built in - no rushing, no back-to-back chaos. I'll use simple prompts, a little movement, and a lot of silliness to draw out your kid's real personality rather than a posed version. Parents are welcome in the room or just outside - whatever helps your child feel most like themselves. Nobody is getting told to sit still.
How it works
Once you book your slot, I'll send a short prep guide with a few tips for the morning of. We'll spend 20 minutes together in the studio. Your gallery of hand-edited images will be ready within 2 to 3 weeks, printed and ready to go on your wall.
Better Than Picture Day runs seasonally, with a limited number of slots each session day. Reserve your spot below before this round fills up.

About Me
I'm Rosie - a Seattle-based photographer who has spent a lot of time around kids. Like, a lot.
I started my career as a school photographer for a local company. I've taught photography. I worked as a nanny. I taught preschoolers. I have genuinely seen every version of kid in front of a camera there is. The shy one, the showoff, the one who decides mid-session that they are done, the one who arrives grumpy and leaves asking if they can come back tomorrow.
I know how to work with all of them.
My approach is simple. I'm not trying to get kids to perform. I'm watching for the moment they forget I'm there. The laugh that takes over their whole face. The look of pure concentration. The personality you see every single day but can never quite catch on camera.
That's what Better Than Picture Day is for. I've been waiting to make this happen for a while, and I'm glad it's here.
Questions before booking?
FAQS
What should my kid wear?
Whatever makes them feel like themselves. A favorite shirt, a dress they love, something they picked out themselves that morning with full confidence. Avoid busy logos or patterns that compete with their face - but the most important thing is that they feel like them, not dressed for a performance.
And if they want to bring their favorite stuffed animal or a beloved toy, or request that we play their favorite song while we shoot? Yes to all of it. Those details are what make a portrait feel like your kid, and nobody else's.
I'll send a simple style note when you book with a few more ideas.
My kid is shy. Will this still work?
Yes! I believe all kids, including shy kids, often produce some of the most beautiful portraits. I've worked with a lot of shy kids. I work quietly and without pressure. No countdown, no big smile, no forcing anything. We move at their pace. Shy kids can take a little longer to warm up, which is why I keep my session length at 30 minutes.
What age range is this for?
These sessions work beautifully for kids roughly ages 2.5 to 12. If you have a younger toddler or a preteen and you're wondering if it's a fit, please reach out. I'm happy to talk it through.
Can siblings do a session together?
Better Than Picture Day is designed so that each kid gets their own spotlight. Because every kid deserves that. If you'd like to add a sibling, just mention it when you reach out, and we'll add 15 minutes and a second child to your slot for $75.
How many photos will we get?
You'll receive 10 hand-edited images, each personally selected and edited by me. No AI culling, no near-misses included to pad the count. Every photo in your gallery is one I'd be proud to put my name on.
What if my kid is having an off day?
That's what I'm here for. An off day isn't a problem. It's just a different kind of real. I've worked with kids long enough to know that the turnaround is almost always closer than it looks. Give me 30 minutes, and I'll find the moment.
How do I know when the next dates are?
Better Than Picture Day runs a few times a year. The best way to hear about upcoming dates first is to join my email list at [link]. That's where new session days get announced before I post anywhere else.
